How many Kurds now in conflict areas?

We picnic’ed in the park with Iranian Kurdish friends this weekend, enjoying a bit of Newroz exercise playing “dodge ball”.  I spoke about my desire to visit Iran again soon. I was firmly told that this would not be a good idea. The fact that trouble was brewing seemed to be a given.

Then I realised how many Kurdish friends are now in troubled areas. Kurds in Syria have been drawn into what will likely be  along and bloody civil war. Friends in Turkey see no end to the pressure put upon them.

It made me appreciate the relative freedom of the Newroz celebration in Kurdistan in Iraq last week. And to reflect on the fact that so many Kurds seem to be in the eye of the storm this spring.
